Sam Turns Five

Sam turned 5 on April 11th. He had been waiting for his birthday for months and was so giddy when the day finally arrived. He had a hard time deciding between a dinosaur party and a star wars party and in the end went with a dinosaur party. He really wanted a dinosaur cake but I just didn't have the heart or energy to go all out this year so I talked him into an exploding volcano cake. We are all about the birthday cake at the Hibbert house and I saw several online and thought it would be so easy and cool. I baked two 8" cakes and then another cake in my pampered chef batter bowl to make it domed. I cut a cylinder out of the middle to place the cup to hold the dry ice but I didn't make it wide enough so when I inserted the cup I had to push it in and the whole cake collapsed into several pieces. I got out the frosting and tried to "glue" it together but it just crumbled even worse. I just fell to the floor because I was so upset. Sam came over to me and gave me a hug and told me not to worry and that he liked it. I was so devastated. I put it into the fridge to harden. When Allison and her crew showed up I showed it to her and she said I bet Jerel can fix it. He's real artistic so I told him to go at it and he was my lifesaver. Neil usually is but he was still at work. Jerel made it look awesome like it was supposed to be.

I made several party games. The first was called hatch the egg. A baby dinosaur was in each balloon and they had to pop it.
At the dollar store I found a pin the pteradactyl on the picture.
Not even close
The last game was a dinosaur stomp. They had to wear the dinosaur feet while completing an obstacle course holding an egg on a spoon without dropping it.

The volcano cake getting ready to explode. The kids were mesmerized by it.

Here comes the lava.
Grandma Hibbert got Sam a ton of star wars legos. He was in heaven and got busy building.
See the look on Sam's face? He knew it was a pillow pet before he got it out of the bag and was so happy. What is it with kids and pillow pets? They all want one. Thanks Nana.
Sammy reading his new book. I think Sam had an awesome party.
