One of the leaders had brought a heater to use in the tent to keep them warm but Neil was a little hesitant to sleep in the tent with it. We've recently heard of a couple of deaths using them and other things while camping. It made Neil nervous and he kept thinking about Mikey crying in the window (Mikey is always sad when anyone leaves) as he left and the thought of that being the last time he saw his dad was enough for Neil not to chance it so Neil slept out on the snow, under the stars. Crazy in -2 degrees weather. He said he actually slept all night long and was warm. Seriously, sometimes I don't know what I'm going to do with that man. He makes me laugh.
Neil was amazed at how clean the house was when he got home. We had plans to go out as a Primary presidency with spouses that night so I had two hours to get all my errands ran so I was in a hurry. I knew we were going to be late so I called Rachel and said we'd be 30 minutes late which wasn't a problem since there was a 30 minute wait to get a table. She told me not to worry and to not be in a hurry. Well I didn't listen and was going down a side road (a way I never take) to get home and got pulled over. Cop said I was going 18 over the limit. He gave me a ticket for going 9 over. How kind of him. I was so upset with myself now. What a way to ruin a day, but I knew I was in the wrong. So now I was really late and then got stopped again by a really long train. Luckily when we got to the restaurant they still had not been seated so it all worked out and we had a really good time.

I'd rush too. Even when people tell me not to worry, I like to be on time. Sorry about the ticket!
Neil is such a good kid - your boys are going to have so much fun as they grow up and go to Young Mens with him. :) Joe went on a winter campout last weekend too - he loved it. Like you, it's not my idea of fun, glad the boys and men all like it, they can go together and we'll stay home where it's warm!
I don't know where you found Neil, but point me in that direction!!! He is so great...but sleeping in the cold, um....not so much.
Here in Hawaii we do a week long Winter camp because it stays so warm and only rains. Plus, so many parents want to give their boys something to do during their school break (kind of sad)! My oldest son's first snow camping trip (1st ever as a boy scout too) was ice cave camping on Mt Baker in WA state. Important facts he discovered... 1) water bottles need to stay INSIDE the sleeping bag at night and 2) touks (hat) are very important through the night.
Our next winter camp was the following year. All three boys and I did the historic Bastogne march and then slept under the stars in the forest. It was AMAZING to wake up with a light dusting of snow covering all of us.
Sorry about the ticket!
