Science Fair

This year both Conner and Sam did science fair projects.  I left it up to them to decide what they wanted to do it on.  Conner on the way to school noticed all the frosted cars on the road and decided he wanted to do it on frost and find out if there was anything to prevent frost.  Neil and I knowing the only way to prevent frost is to cover your car, said nothing and let the little scientist go to work.  After doing some research online he sprayed salt, vinegar and alcohol solutions on the car windows along with oil and cooking spray.  Nothing worked.  He finally decided to cover the windows with different materials and finally he realized that physical barriers prevent frost.  We had a heck of a time with this project because the weather was weird.  We either go snow or rain or it was too warm but eventually we had 3 good days of frost.

We chose the name Frozen for his project based on the popular Disney movie of the same name and after he gave his presentation to the class, his friend leaned over and whispered printing that title was probably illegal.  Oops.  He's probably right.

Sam wasn't required to do a project like Conner, but really wanted to it anyway.  Ugh.  He chose to do it on animals adaptations, specifically camouflage.  One thing I learned from this project is how to spell camouflage.  He covered a board with newspaper and then glued 10  newspaper squares (camouflage) and 10 white squares to it.  He went around the neighborhood and asked people to count how many squares they could see in 1 second.  Very few people ever noticed the newspaper squares because they were camouflaged.

He earned second place in the second grade.  I am so glad this is over with.  Sam is already thinking about what he wants to do for next year.  He'd like to get it done this summer.  Sam is our go getter.  He does not procrastinate, his school work at least.  If there is something to be done 2 weeks from now and he knows about it, he just gets it done.  He definitely doesn't get that from me and I am glad he is not a procrastinator and could learn from him.
