Missions

I was talking with the kids in the van the other day about missions.  I've noticed we often have some of the best conversations in the van as we're traveling around.  I am glad that I keep the radio off (mostly because that along with the noise from the van and kids is just too much for my hearing aids and I get a headache) which allows this to happen.  I was telling the kids that we expect them to save and to pay for their missions.  Their dad and all his siblings paid for their missions (and college too) so I know it can be done.  Besides, Elder Uchtdorf, at our regional conference a couple years ago told the parents to expect their kids to pay for their missions.  You want a good missionary, then let them pay for it and they will be one of the best.  It will mean more to them.  This is beside the fact that we'll just probably never be able to afford to send 5 kids on missions, many at the same time.  Anyway, so they asked how much will it cost and when I told them about $15,000 Sam started to cry and said but we only have $21 between all of us right now.  I chuckled inside.  I know it seems so daunting to me yet alone a child but the kids need to know the expectation now and can work toward it.  Anyway I reassured them that when they turn 15 or 16 they will get a job and be able to earn enough.  Well Mikey asks what if Jesus comes before then because I think he will.  Well I guess you'll be off the hook then kiddo.
