Lucy Turns 6!

Lucy finally turned 6.  She was so happy and excited.  She loves to create things out of garbage, umm I mean stuff.  Nothing is safe in our house.  If you put something in recycling, she'll most likely retrieve it and save it for some creation.  Needless to say, Lucy got a lot of crafting supplies for her birthday.  She got a book full of ideas of what to make with all her garbage and also a duct tape kit of things to make out of duck tape.  She was in heaven.

The one thing she wanted more than anything was her own mattress.  For the last couple months, her and Eliza have shared the same mattress, with Eliza on one end and Lucy on the other.  They liked it and since they are so small it worked.  The only reason Lucy didn't have a mattress was because I was waiting for them to go on sale and Costco and they never did so we finally just bit the bullet.  Lucy is on the top bunk and spends a lot of time decorating her space on the walls, always adding new stuff.

This is Lucy's absolute favorite outfit.  I asked her why it was her favorite and she said it is because she feels pretty when she wears it.  Don't we all have an outfit or two that we feel more attractive in than others.  It's cute that Lucy is starting to have an opinion in what she wears.  I usually buy the kids clothes the year before when they are on clearance but this last year there are 3 outfits in her closet that she refused to wear that have the tags still on them.  So for Lucy, I've decided to buy less and let her pick her clothes out at the store, even though they may not be on clearance, so she'll wear them.  The boys still don't care.
We let Lucy have a friend party this year and she invited some of the neighborhood kids.  She was so excited and planned it all.  I mean everything.  I was planning on having a theme and have the cake, games, goodie bags all coordinate but she knew what she wanted and planned it.  She made up all the games, some of which I thought would be lame but the kids loved it.  The party started with a light saber battle.  Then we played who can keep the balloon in the air the longest.  She played limbo, Don't eat Lucy, a bowling game and had a freeze dance competition.  She wanted a flower cake and pinata.

She loved all the gifts from Grandma Hibbert.  Grandma always spoils the kids on their birthday.

I learned a big lesson today.  In the age of social media and pinterest, I find myself getting caught up in having the perfect party where everything coordinates but why.  It's not really for the kid it's for others, but not even the other kids, it's usually to impress the parents because in all honesty the kids don't care that much.  They just want to have a party with cake and ice cream.  From here on out I'll let the kids take charge and do what they want and then I don't have to stress about it.

Lucy is quite the planner.  I love it because so I am.  We think about every detail and how things will flow.  She is very helpful to me and I can see us having some amazing times in our future as she matures.  I was in charge of planning and preparing lunch for 300 women for our stake women's conference and the day I had to go buy most of the food I had the two girls with me.  I was dreading it but it was the only time I could go.  I got one of the flatbed carts and started to load it up.  I thought having the girls with me would be a huge headache but Lucy was actually a real help.  She would organize everything on the cart and make sure there was room for Eliza to sit.  She helped push the cart because it was heavy and hard to maneuver by myself.  I was so impressed and began to see some of her strengths.  She is very independent and stubborn as well.  She is the best big sister to Eliza.  I trust Lucy to watch Eliza over her brothers.  Lucy, at 5 was happy to change Eliza's poopy diaper and did a great job.  She'll get Eliza dressed in the morning and give her a bath.  She's a little mother and it is so special to see her cultivating motherly habits at such a young age.  She likes to tease that she's the momma, but she does such a great job at such a young age.
